“Get a sense of humour” to become copyright defence in the UK

Many countries, including the USA have an exemption to copyright law that allows parody, caricature and pastiche. Without these exceptions the world would be a poorer place: we’d have no Wierd Al Yankovic! In the UK, however, there has been no such exemption from copyright law for the wild and witty. It’s good to hear that the UK government now plans to legislate to provide to allow these exemptions. Amusingly, it’s the bureaucrats in Brussels, so often portrayed as Europe’s anti-fun killjoys, who passed the European legislation upon which our legislation will be based. I’m looking forward to a new wave of marketing creativity once this legislation is in place.
